Professionalism; Says Who?

The word "Professional" is one that is used quite often. Do you know what it really means? Do you exhibit professionalism in the execution of your work? Do the people who work with or for you know what professionalism is and how it is measured?

There are various definitions of the term.

pro·fes·sion·al·ism - according to Merriam-Webster online is defined below:

: the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person

: the following of a profession (as athletics) for gain or livelihood

For some it relates to dress and advanced education. Undoubtedly, these are both parts of the equation however they are not the only yardsticks by which professionalism is measured.

Professionalism encompasses a variety of concepts but most importantly, it is a mental attitude and understanding that determines the correct way and the incorrect way of executing something. For everything, there IS a way! There may indeed be different ways but the way that is right, and the way that achieves the RIGHT results in most circumstances is the way that is most widely appreciated and acceptable.

For the purpose of this note, let us stick to the first definition that speaks to "conduct" "aims" and "qualities".

Qualities: - Presentable in appearance, Approachable in Demeanour, Confident in Execution, Versed Communicator
Conduct: - Ethical, Honest, Poised, Accountable, Responsible, Respectful
Aims: - Reliability, Competence, Organisation Skills, Constant Learning

Each of these terms can be broken down into their individual parts however we prefer to leave you to ponder on them and share whether or not you agree with this perspective.
